LYNCHBURG AREA’S CONTINUED CLAIMS FOR UNEMPLOYMENT DIP BELOW 9,000 FOR FIRST TIME IN TWO MONTHS

6/26/2020: A total of 8,860 continued unemployment claims were filed in the Central Virginia Workforce Development Area during the week of June 20, according to VEC data released Thursday, June 25. The current figure represents a week-to-week drop in continued unemployment claims of 2.7% and an 8.2% decrease from the high number of 9,659 continued claims filed during the week of May 9.

CONTINUED CLAIMS FOR UNEMPLOYMENT IN THE LYNCHBURG AREA REMAIN ABOVE 9,000 FOR 7TH STRAIGHT WEEK

6/19/2020: While staying on a downward course, the number of continued claims for unemployment filed in the greater Lynchburg area remains above 9,000 for the seventh straight week according to the most recent numbers reported by the Virginia Employment Commission.

UNEMPLOYMENT FIGURES REMAIN FLAT WEEK-TO-WEEK IN CENTRAL VIRGINIA WORKFORCE AREA

6/12/2020: 9,149 continued unemployment claims were filed in the Central Virginia Workforce Development Area during the week of June 6, according to VEC data released Thursday, June 11. The current figure represents a week-to-week drop in continued unemployment claims of 0.5%.

CONTINUED CLAIMS FOR UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE IN THE LYNCHBURG AREA DECREASE 3.6%

6/5/2020: Continuing a trend that started in mid-May, the number of people filing first-time and weekly claims for unemployment insurance in the greater Lynchburg area declined according to the most recent figures made available by the Virginia Employment Commission.

9,193 continued claims for unemployment insurance were filed in the Central Virginia Workforce Development Area during the week of May 30, according to VEC figures released Thursday, June 4; a 3.6% decrease from the 9,541 claims filed during the week of May 23.

CONTINUED CLAIMS FOR UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE CONTINUE TO RISE IN CENTRAL VIRGINIA

5/8/2020: The latest data released by the Virginia Employment Commission illustrates a continued upward trend in the number of people filing weekly claims for unemployment in the greater Lynchburg area.

According to VEC numbers released Thursday, May 7, 9,451 continued claims for unemployment insurance were filed in the Central Virginia Workforce Development Area during the week of May 2, 2020. Continued claims are made by individuals who have filed an initial claim for unemployment and are now making weekly claims to continue receiving benefits. The Central Virginia Workforce Development area includes the city of Lynchburg, along with the counties of Amherst, Appomattox, Bedford, and Campbell. Total employment for the Central Virginia Workforce Development Area was 108,959 in the fourth quarter of 2019.

4/23/2020: The Virginia Employment Commission (VEC) announced April 23 that weekly initial claims for unemployment insurance climbed further down from its recent peak while the rate of growth in continued claims filings slowed significantly.

TEN LOCAL BUSINESSES SELECTED TO RECEIVE COVID-19 RAPID RESPONSE FUNDING

4/15/2020: The Central Virginia Workforce Development Board announced April 15 that 10 employers were approved to receive Rapid Response funding through the United States Department of Labor’s Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) Title I program, to help support small businesses impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

INITIAL UNEMPLOYMENT CLAIMS SURPASS 7,000 IN LOCAL AREA

4/10/2020: Data reported April 9 indicates 7,526 people in the Central Virginia workforce area filed initial claims for unemployment insurance between the weeks of March 14 and April 4, 2020. The Central Virginia workforce region includes the counties of Amherst, Appomattox, Bedford, and Campbell along with the city of Lynchburg.
